Navigating Workplace Diversity: Building an Inclusive Company Culture

141

Diversity and inclusivity have always been encouraged but many companies just treat their employees like a number. What these companies don’t know is the numerous benefits of improving their workplace.

If you are a company that suffers from poor morale in the workplace or bad staff retention then read on.

Create a Safe Place For Your Employees

One of the main priorities for a business should be to improve culture. One of the best methods for this is to create a safe environment for your employees to work in. For example, if your company is based in the city centre, people may find it dangerous to leave late at night. There also could be more crime in that area. If that is the case, move your company office to a much safer environment and close to public transport and always in the light.

Expand The Company Holiday Calendar

We live in a world with many religions that celebrate different holidays and you must acknowledge this. We already celebrate Christmas and New Year’s all together but why not celebrate other religious holidays which are worth celebrating such as Diwali and Ramadan?

We understand that many companies cannot offer these holidays however, you should be more inclusive if you can. Make people in the workplace more aware of these holidays by putting them in the company calendar so they can acknowledge other employee’s celebratory beliefs.

Reward Those Who Are Putting in The Effort

It is very important to recognise employees’ efforts, especially if the company benefits from their hard work. Building an environment where you reward your employees for hard work and encourage clothes to recognise their hard work builds a very positive team culture.

There are many periods throughout the year where you can congratulate people for their work, it doesn’t have to be at the end of the year. You can either do it at the end of each month or the end of each quarter. Give them work bonuses or offer them an extra day off throughout the year.

Consider getting a company rewards wheel. This is where you reward people for reaching their target. Then once they reach their target, you can spin the wheel where you can give them vouchers for a local shopping centre. Maybe pay for their parking at a local car park in Leeds. There are so many things you can offer your employees to reward them for their hard work and, it will improve that work company culture.

Provide Opportunities Where People Can Talk

Providing opportunities for your employees to discuss personal work matters is another great way to be more inclusive. There are always areas where people can continue to learn about different aspects of their work. That is why you must provide your employees with those opportunities. If employees know that they can learn something new to help progress their career then that is always better.

Additionally, it isn’t just work that you can discuss. It can also be more personal and an opportunity for people to learn more about their employees. Create an environment where your employees can mix and mingle with one another and encourage them to find out more about each other.

Create A Work Forum For Introverts To Provide More

There are extroverts and introverts in every company however, you must be inclusive with both of these characters. Introverts may not input much in a group conversation but they still may be one of the more valuable people in the workplace. This is why a chatroom/ forum is encouraged.

There are many platforms you can use for a company forum. Google Chat, Discord and WhatsApp allow you to create a chatroom where you can communicate with your staff members. In these chatrooms, you can either use them to socialise with one another when working from home or, you can have it so you voice the latest industry news or topics which are circulating. Either way, a chatroom is a great way to make an introvert far more included in a conversation.

One To One Conversation

If you are a team leader or manager, it is important to consider one-to-one conversations. Here, you will speak with your employees to find out more about the individuals themselves. Additionally, you can speak with them about their careers.

See where they want to be within the company. Some people will see avenues where they might want to manage their team themselves. Other people may be happy with their current role and don’t want to manage a team. That is why these one-to-one meetings are essential for making employees feel more included and to help them understand they are valuable.

Summary

There are many things that you can do to make your workplace more inclusive. Additionally, it offers multiple benefits such as making the individual more valued. It can also help with a sense of belonging and help to improve staff retention. All of these are important benefits for a company to be successful.
